Perfume’s origins stretch back thousands of years, with ancient civilizations using fragrances for rituals, medicine, and personal adornment.
- Ancient Mesopotamia & Egypt: Perfume was used in religious ceremonies and embalming practices. The Egyptians were skilled in crafting scented oils and incense, with Cleopatra famously using perfumes to seduce Roman leaders.
- Ancient Greece & Rome: The Greeks and Romans embraced perfumes for personal use, celebrating their craftsmanship in elaborate baths and social gatherings.
- The Middle Ages: After the fall of the Roman Empire, the use of perfume declined in Europe. However, it flourished in the Islamic world, where scholars advanced the techniques of distillation to extract essential oils.
- The Renaissance & Beyond: In the 14th century, Italy became the center of perfume-making, eventually spreading to France, which remains the heart of the perfume industry today. Perfume was used to mask body odors and became a symbol of status among the European elite.
